Nipple First Aid

It all begins with an idea.

Nipple tenderness is common in the first few weeks of breastfeeding, nipple pain and damage however is not normal and is often a sign that an adjustment to your positioning or latch needs to be made! So what do you do if you’ve got some nipple damage and it’s painful to nurse?

My go to nipple first aid as a lactation consultant

  1. Get a good quality nipple cream- motherlove is my favorite

  2. Allow the nipples to air out after each feeding and then apply a liberal amount of nipple cream. We want nipples to heal wet, don’t allow them to dry out and create hard scabs.

  3. Use silverettes to protect the nipples, help them heal, and keep your nipple cream sealed in.

  4. Lansinoh soothie pads are hydrogel and can be stored in the freezer between uses and feel amazing on ouchie nipples.

  5. Coat your breastpads with a layer of nipple cream so they aren’t wicking moisture from them.

  6. Alternate sides at each feeding so nipples get a longer break

  7. Consider pumping or using a haaka if it’s too painful to latch

  8. Consider a nipple shield while your healing

  9. Have your latch assessed by an IBCLC

  10. If pain and damage continues after adjusting the latch ask your lactation consultant to assess for oral ties.

  11. If you have open sores and bleeding ask your primary care doctor for an all purpose nipple ointment prescription, it has antibacterial anti inflammatory and antifungal ingredients  and is super helpful if you have a lot of damage! Just remember to wash your nipples off before feeding baby!

Breastfeeding shouldn’t be painful! If it is there’s something wrong!

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
